Melbourne\, Australia will be the host City for this year’s 63rd Annual United Nations Conference for Non-Governmental Organizations\, on the theme “Advance Global Health\: Achieve the MDGs.” This city\, Australia’s most multicultural metropolis\, is home to around 140 cultures many of whose people came here through waves of migration dating back from the first people\, to European settlement\, to the more recent refugees from the Horn of Africa\, the Middle East and Asia. Last year approximately 180\,000 people immigrated to Australia. It is therefore fitting that the first ever UN major UN conference to be held in Australia\, should be held in this auspicious city. Equally appropriate is the fact that the theme of the conference should be focused on an issue dear to the hearts of the Australian government and people and its immigrant populations—that of global health and its importance in achieving the Millennium Development Goals [MDGs].
