SAfAIDS Zambia Country Office: Central Coordinating HIV and AIDS Information and Advocacy Hub

Supporting Zambia’s Advocacy Campaign for People Living with HIV and AIDS

Officially launched on 29^th May, 2009 and fully operational since then, the central hub is situated at SAfAIDS premises in Lusaka. Establishment of the advocacy hub was inspired by little/lack of coordination of HIV and AIDS advocacy efforts around the country. As part of a key component of the Community Preparedness Project, which SAfAIDS Zambia is implementing, pools of activists and advocates have been trained in Advocacy Skills to implement successful campaigns, but despite this achievement in building the capacity of these advocates, a wide gap still exists for implementation of a well coordinated campaign. This has led to, among other things, little recognition of advocacy efforts, achievements and low participation of stakeholders in advocacy activities.

National HIV and AIDS Strategic Framework - Zambia

Zambia is one of the Sub Saharan African countries worst affected by the HIV and AIDS pandemic. Estimates put the prevalence rate at about 16 percent among the 15-49 years age group and about 1 million Zambians infected with HIV, of which over 200,000 are in need of antiretroviral therapy.

With over one million people living with HIV/AIDS and 20% of these eligible for ART, expanding access to treatment is one of the most pressing challenges in Zambia. Provision of treatment is essential to alleviate suffering and to mitigate the devastating impact of the epidemic. It also presents unprecedented opportunities for a more effective response by involving people living with HIV/AIDS, their families and communities in providing care and strengthening of HIV prevention through increased awareness. Increased awareness creates a demand for counselling and testing and reducing stigma and discrimination.

There is no aspect of life that has not directly or indirectly been negatively influenced by the AIDS epidemic. AIDS has become the major cause of illness and death among the young and middle aged adults, depriving households and society of a critical human resource base and thereby reversing the social and economic gains made since independence.

Workplace HIV and AIDS Policy Manual - 2008, Zambia

HIV has impacted on all types and sizes of enterprises: the public, private and informal sectors; small, medium and large enterprises; donor agencies; non-governmental and Government bodies. No workplace is untouched. The epidemic causes increased absenteeism, higher rates of staff turnover, increased operational costs (funeral benefits, health care costs, etc.); all of which result in a decline in productivity. For the private sector, HIV has a direct impact on profitability and ultimately affects the wider economic climate in which companies operate.
